Zymo Research Advances Microbial Discovery at the Microbial Dark Matter Symposium

Symposium attendees gather in front of a grassy golf course

IRVINE, Calif., October 2, 2026 — Zymo Research, a leading innovator of microbiome solutions, was a proud platinum sponsor of the 2nd annual Microbial Dark Matter Symposium, where multidisciplinary experts from academia, industry, and government gathered to examine the far-reaching mysteries of the microbial universe. From challenging or unculturable samples to convoluted genetic material, Zymo Research conversed with leaders researching dark matter to support breakthroughs in microbial discovery.

The Microbial Dark Matter Symposium took place at The Ranch in Laguna Beach from September 16–17, 2026, bringing together over 130 attendees. Through interactive presentations, panel discussions, and posters, the Microbial Dark Matter Symposium provided an intimate and welcoming platform to share emerging research, reveal cutting-edge innovations, review current funding opportunities, and cultivate interdisciplinary collaborations. The wide-ranging topics covered during the event reflected the enormous scale of microbial dark matter, spanning microbial information throughout diverse environments, like the human body, the ocean, and even space.

The event opened with Dr. Jack Gilbert’s exploration of the intricate relationships between microbes, soil, and human health and closed with a keynote address by Dr. Jonathan Eisen, which used the lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” to reflect on the symposium, call for multifaceted collaborations, and identify pressing limitations in the field. By providing a podium for experts to discuss advancements, remaining gaps, and future directions, the Microbial Dark Matter Symposium enriches the broader scientific community to push discoveries forward.

Zymo Research is actively developing solutions to advance research in microbial dark matter. At the symposium, the company showcased several of these upcoming technologies. The ZymoBIOMICS® product line will be scaling up with a Midiprep Kit to accommodate greater sample input quantities from environmental samples while maintaining unbiased microbial lysis. ZymoBIOMICS® is also adding a new Multi-Kingdom Standard that features eukaryotic parasites in addition to bacteria, archaea, fungi, and all four viral genome types, providing an important validation method for wider microbiome workflows. In addition, Zymo Research featured Rota Prep’s Megalyser instrument, which leverages plate-based lysis tube formats for high-throughput sample processing. Outside of the bench, Zymo Research continues to develop bioinformatic resources, including the MIQ Score System to analyze bias in microbiome sequencing.

The Zymo Team welcomes attendees to the symposium
